I was a young teen when I started to set aside 10% tithe from my meagre allowance. There were no school buses or free textbooks so my parents bore the education bills for all nine children – booklists that were longer than my knee-length pleated uniform, the cost of which they also bore. And taxi fares for seven high school years.
I started to tutor at age fourteen and my “income” increased, and happily, the tithe. My mother was convinced that we were successful because of faithfulness to God, and that belief steered me to tithe every resources I had, in particular, my time. I decided to set aside 17 hours a week to the Lord. Not that I had much of a choice at first – my mother supervised our prayer and Bible reading times, but with regular church attendance, I often surpassed the weekly goal.
I tithe hours to God to this day, devoting nearly three hours to Him daily. Sometimes it fluctuates but the weekly quota is observed. It’s not a legalistic practice but an act of obedience, and love. He loves me and I love him, and I honour that relationship with my time. In prayer or meditation, listening and waiting, I draw inspiration. Jeremiah 33:3 promises, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “unsearchable” as “not lending itself to research, hidden”. This implies that research has not captured themes and topics that can be written. The KJV replaces “unsearchable” with “mighty”. It blew my mind when the truth dawned at the potential of “great and mighty and unsearchable things” there are to write about. What a wealth-mine waiting to be tapped into.
Father God gives the heads-up of this not-yet-known intelligence to anyone who calls on Him. To the writer who takes the time to hear from Him, the Lord will reveal those insights and fresh material. Imagine being entrusted with undisclosed subject matter from a limitless literary source! Imagine being able to craft a best seller with creativity using God’s ideas! That’s as overflowing a promise as declared in Malachi 3. One hundred-fold return.
It’s proved and tested and applies to any area of life.
Have you considered tithing time to God?
